Overview
Welcome to the Astro Camper — a 200k custom-built 2021 Mercedes Sprinter 144" High Roof, outfitted into a comfortable, genuinely off-grid home on wheels. Every system was chosen and installed with care.
Stand fully upright inside. Cook on a dual induction stovetop. Sleep in blackout comfort. Run the 12V rooftop air conditioner with no generator or hookup — it draws from a 640 amp-hour Dakota Lithium battery that's kept charged by solar while you're parked and by the engine's alternator while you drive, so you can stay out for days. A Victron touchscreen panel shows you battery charge, power use, and water levels in real time, so you always know exactly where you stand. Hot water and an outdoor shower let you rinse off after the beach or a trail without hunting for facilities. (If you'd like to stay connected, Starlink internet is available as an add-on.)
Inside, maple cabinetry, sheep wool insulation, and three-zone dimmable lighting make the cabin feel calm and warm rather than utilitarian. The U-bench dinette seats four and converts to a full bed in a couple of minutes. Two swivel Lagun tables — one at the dinette, one on the passenger side — let you dine, work, or lounge anywhere in the cabin, and the tabletops double as the bed platform.
We've also outfitted the van with a full outdoor living kit, included at no extra charge: two premium packable camp chairs, a folding table, a parachute hammock, solar string lights, a Slim-Fold cook station, and a butane burner for cooking outside. There's a tool kit, a handheld vacuum for quick tidy-ups, and a NOCO jump starter / tire inflator on board for peace of mind. Show up with your clothes and your groceries — the rest is already here.
Outside, a retractable awning gives you instant shade, and a full 360° camera system makes reversing a 20-foot van straightforward, even if you've never driven anything this size.
The van is based in West Covina, CA — well positioned for Joshua Tree, Big Sur, Death Valley, Sequoia, Santa Barbara, and the campsites in between.
One important note: the van stands 9'10" tall, so standard parking garages won't work — plan on outdoor or open-air parking. We cover this and everything else in a detailed digital guide sent before every trip.
